Monsters come alive.

In 1966 things were spicing up with a totally new motor racing series – Can-Am.

It started out as a race series for group 7 sports racers with two races in Canada (Can) and four races in the United States of America (Am). The series was initially sponsored by Johnson Wax. The regulations were minimal and permitted unlimited engine sizes, allowed turbocharging supercharging and virtually unrestricted aerodynamics. It virtually was an “anything goes” policy. As long as the car had two seats, bodywork enclosing the wheels, and met basic safety standards, it was allowed.

A plethora of designs followed – ranging from the sublime to the seemingly ridiculous – but which all existed for a short time proving what emanated from the fertile minds of a few, the stuff that worked and what didn’t.

The Bruce & Denny Show.
The people who ticked all the right boxes were New Zealanders Bruce Mclaren and Denny Hulme and who dominated the series from 1967 onwards but that didn’t stop Hulme also winning the F-1 World Championship that same year. The F-1 and Can-Am races never clashed with each other, however, traveling logistics were nevertheless horrendous and both men spent countless hours in the sky.

Orange Thunder – My image.

I wanted to portray the orange Can-Am monster from the period when their development was still on full auto and the wings suspended on slender spars which their F1 counterparts were still busy destroying on a daily basis.

In 1969 and after a plethora of F1 accidents relating directly to these high wings collapsing, the governing body – CSI banned the further use of them overnight.

I chose to depict Bruce in the high-winged McLaren M8B as I wanted to portray the racers which in those days never saw the inside of a wind tunnel. Tufts of wool, sellotaped to the bodywork was sufficient to ascertain any of its merits or shortcomings. Driving behind an oil-spewing competitor would also give some indication of your aerodynamics’ effectiveness; the proverbial wet finger in the wind still worked.

The old fashioned riveted, sheet aluminum cars from that era were great to behold. The honest suspension in all its painted or plated steel and rose-jointed glory invisible from the outside and covered by an acre of glass fiber bodywork.

No meticulously tailored advertising which would arrive in the1970s when the large tobacco companies started pouring their millions into elitist F-1, but scissored-to-size stickers by the already busy mechanics or PR people.

An idea is born – Targa Florio

This race was the brainchild of the wealthy race driver and automobile enthusiast, Vincenzo Florio, who in 1906 created the first race run over 3 laps equaling 277 miles over the most treacherous mountain roads on Sicily, Italy.

Alessandro Cagno won the inaugural race in 9 hours and with an average speed of 30 mph.

Mountain madness.

Over the years, the race length was repeatedly altered, the track had many hundreds of curves and bends over the unclosed public roads with sheer cliffs and very little means to prevent cars and driver disappearing over the edge.

Neither were there any safeguard provisions for the many daredevil spectators, perched on the outside of corners, cheering on their heroes literally inches away from the speeding cars.

As the years progressed, so did the cars’ power and speed – one driver calling the race, “totally insane”, and during the 1977 event, the police forcibly stopped the race.

The Targa Florio race still exists, but on a completely different level. With the variations of track lengths used, the fastest lap times ever set on these treacherous public roads were just under 80mph average !

A challenge.

In 1988, after one of my images of Gilles Villeneuve had been featured in Enzo Ferrari’s book, “Pilote Che Gente”, Mr. Ferrari presented me with a signed copy of his book.

As a direct result, a year later, a publisher and I both visited Ferrari in Maranello for a fine art project, our meeting with the legendary Dr. Franco Gozzi and our lunch at the equally famous ‘Cavallino’ restaurant would cement that purest of Ferrari magic.

My publisher also challenged me to depict a historical racing scene which would combine my usual realistic technical representation with an equally realistic background atmosphere. Without any hesitation I chose the Targa. I also chose to paint one of Mexico’s most fearless drivers – the 18 year old Ricardo Rodriguez who, along with his equally fearless older brother, Pedro, were signed up to drive a Ferrari 196S for the North American Racing Team (NART)

My image shows the extremities that all drivers would have to endure – both in weather and of geographical nature – and in the fullest of knowledge that the seemingly sturdy stone built walls would easily yield to the might of a race car – none of which deterred the exceptionally brave Rodriguez brothers.

This particular image also appeared in a subsequential version of the same book.

There have seldom been races which have been held under such atrocious conditions that they remained in the imagination of many. Such one was the 1968 Grand Prix of Germany on the 14.2-mile long Nürburgring. With its 1000 feet of elevation change and 160 bends, Jackie Stewart, who would have his first world championship the following year nicknamed it, “The Green Hell”

Driving rains and thick fog caused havoc with the cars and timing recording equipment, the track’s undulations and high trees exacerbated the conditions, preventing the track from drying out.
It was no wonder that the organizers began to panic and moved various practice sessions, causing headaches for all the teams who had enough work on their hands trying to get their cars to work and to nurse the soaked electrics.
Under conditions which would have delayed or canceled modern day races, the starting flag dropped ten seconds early when only half the waiting field was fully prepared. Many stretches of the track were so treacherous and veiled in thick fog, that there had been an overtaking maneuver between two cars which had gone unnoticed by both drivers. Despite the atrocious conditions, there were no accidents.

While the many drivers grumbled afterwards that the race should never have started, one of them who remained stoically quiet was the 23-year old Ferrari driver, Jacky Ickx. With his car down on power and his bubble visor fogging up, he finished the race in 4th place – in just under 2 1/2 hours – and about 5 minutes behind the winner Jackie Stewart. It was there that Ickx would earn his title, “Rain master”.
The Nürburgring was completed in 1927, using much of the hilly and densely wooded landscape. As a result, there were at least three places where the cars became airborne – not something the fragile three-liter cars were designed to do – not even in 1968.

I decided to show the 312 Ferrari in mid-jump making it seem as if both the car and driver are in their natural environment. With the car’s wheels fully dropped, the maximum suspension load would be endured as the cars fell back on the merciless track half a second later. Over the years, the 14 rounds took their toll on many cars.

I chose one of the 1967 film’s most iconic racing scenes set in one of the few iconic racing circuits left in the world –  Monza circuit in Italy – built in 1922 and which has been host to countless races since. Making this image additionally memorable is that it is set on the now defunct high-speed banking. In those pre-CGI days, much footage was taken from heavily modified racing cars onto which hapless cameramen were strapped desperately trying to achieve the best results – as well as traveling backwards at speeds well over 150 mph!  For other shots, the relatively huge cameras were mounted directly onto the cars. Some, radio operated, could swivel as required.

This famous publicity shot is the one on which I based my painting – it was impossible for the narrow camera angle on the car to get a certain depth of vision. In order to really maximize the brute impact of my image, I spent weeks searching for reference material from literally half a century ago. Poring over a myriad of seemingly innocuous photographs, they would finally yield their wealth of information and I added in excess of 75% to this image in technical and background details.

Though the initial running prototype was built on a Mustang platform, the 289-cu.in. V8 powered Mach 2 was not designed to be a part of the Mustang family. While three initial examples were constructed for testing, two were known to be crushed after the program was ended. The whereabouts of the third example, painted in red, is unknown.

I have always liked creating paintings of historic motorsports scenes, either to present a different angle or to try to capture the dramatic value of the subject matter. I never liked to simply paint “a photo” in my work because I’ve always thought that if you have the photo there’s really no need for an identical painting.

The 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours was exceptional in many ways and my painting has departed from the creation of a purely historic and accurate image to depicting an imaginary scene showing the main protagonists of the event all together.

The setting is the iconic Tertre Rouge turn, the beginning of the Hunaudieres Straight (as the French call this section) that ends at the Mulsanne corner. To say that the weather did not cooperate that weekend of June would be an understatement. It rained almost constantly during the race and accidents (some very serious) occurred. By morning, half the field had retired and, of the 57 starters only 16 were running at the end (12 of them Porsches) and just 7 were classified as finishers, teams which, according to the rules, had covered the minimum distance.

It was a race of “firsts”.

 Ryan Beck

The most radical was the change of the traditional “Le Mans start” when the drivers lined up on the opposite side of the track and run to their cars. That worked just fine when seat belts were not mandatory but, after this rule took effect, drivers were supposed to get in the cockpit, fasten their seat belts and then start the cars and drive away. In truth, that didn’t always happen in all cases. In 1969, John Woolfe lost his life in an accident in the first lap of the race because he didn’t have his seat belt fastened, therefore, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, promoter of the race, mandated that for the 1970 edition all the cars would be lined up in echelon, as always, but with the drivers in the cars with their harnesses securely fastened. Since not all the drivers inside their cars could see a single starter drop the French drapeau tricolore, four marshals were positioned across the track in front of the cars and dropped their flags at the same time signaling the start of the race.

For Porsche, this race maked its 20th anniversary competing at the French classic and this would be their first overall victory even though the marque had won in the smaller classes before.

The three John Wyer Automotive entries displaying their victorious blue and orange Gulf livery and in the hands of an all-star team of seasoned hot-shots were the favorites, but they retired one after the other due to accidents and engine problems.

The 917K (Kurzheck or “short tail” with a 4.5-L flat-12) of Hans Herrmann/Richard Attwood, representing the Austrian Salzburg-Porsche team, took the lead at mid-race.

At that point, the Gulf-JWA works 917L (Langheck or “long tail” powered by the 4.9-L version of the flat-12) of Jo Siffert and Brian Redman had a comfortable 10-lap lead when the Swiss missed a gear change to avoid another car and broke the engine.

Running second and third were two Martini Racing entries (a customer team supported by the factory): the number 27 Porsche 908/02 of Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko and the number 3 917 “long tail” with Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen.

The #3 car featured (for the times) a definitively non-conventional green on blue background color scheme and was nicknamed the Hippie Car or the Psychedelic Porsche by the team. When the rain finally let up on Sunday morning and the track dried up, the 917 drivers were able to pick up the pace and overtook the 908 for the second spot.

Hans Herrmann and Richard “Dickie” Attwood, in a great debut for the No. 23 Porsche Salzburg 917K, completed 343 laps and won by five. Gérard Larrousse and Willi Kauhsen finished second in the psychedelic “long tail” and the 908/02 of Lins/Marko was third with 335 laps.

The number 11 NART Ferrari 512S “long tail” of Americans Sam Posey and Ronnie Bucknum (following the winning 917 in the painting) kept going despite misfiring and errant steering, and managed to finish in fourth place, with 313 laps followed by another Ferrari, the Ecurie Francorchamps’ 512S of De Fierlant/Walker (the yellow car back in the distance in the scene), with 8 laps less.

Behind the leading group on the painting is the number 40 Porsche 914/6 which had a remarkable race finishing sixth overall and winning the GT 2-L class with 285 laps. Entered by a veteran driver who gave Porsche its first ever class win back in 1951(with Edmond Mouche), Auguste “Toto” Veuillet’s French team 914-6 was driven by Guy Chasseuil and Claude Ballot-Léna. Behind them, and finishing three laps further back and winning the GT 2.5-L class and seventh overall was the Ecurie Luxembourg number 64 911S of Nicholas Koob and Erwin Kremer who would become a famous Porsche tuner.

Also in the scene and passing the 911S and the 914-6 right before the bridge is another Porsche 908 owned and entered by Steve McQueen’s Solar Productions with the intention to collect footage for his upcoming racing movie “Le Mans”. One might have noticed the bulk for the camera on the front. McQueen himself planned to share a John Wyer works Porsche 917 with the reigning F1 World Champion Jackie Stewart but that paring was ruled out due to opposition by the producers of the film, the movie investors and McQueen’s life insurance company which denied coverage. Because the script had a Gulf-Porsche victory, Porsche released its works driver Herbert Linge to drive the car alongside Jonathan Williams in the actual race. The effort collected more than 250,000 feet of film, although the frequent stops to change cameras meant the car could not cover enough distance to be classified but it still finished seventh with 282 laps.

My original idea was to do a painting of the race-winning number 23 Porsche celebrating the 50th anniversary of that victory but, the more that I researched the subject, the more I realized that there was a very interesting story behind the winning red and white 917K.

My work here is really something of a freeze frame version of the 1970 edition of the French classic … there’s much more in the history books.
