American Tom Cole borrowed this yellow Ecurie Francorchamps Ferrari 500 F2 for this race. Perhaps it was the driver, or the car, or the combination, but Cole finished at the back in his heat and did not make the final.

This is the factory-entered Ferrari 250 Sport driven by Giovanni Bracco and Gino Bronzoni to an eventual mechanical DNF. Earlier in the year Bracco and Alfonso Rolfo had won the Mille Miglia in this same car. Ascari and Villoresi had a DNF at Le Mans with it but Bracco and Paolo Marzotto put up another win in the 12 Hours of Pescara.

Dan Gurney with the 8-cylinder Porsche 804 at Cottage Corner on the Aintree circuit. On the grid, Jim Clark had “stolen” Gurney’s steering wheel but returned it before the start. Gurney suffered a slipping clutch during the race and ended up finishing 9th, two laps down on the winner, practical joker Jim Clark in a Lotus.

Tin Mayer was a very talented, young American driver and the brother of Ted Mayer, who was Bruce McLaren’s partner. Here, Mayer is at Druids on his way to a sixth place finish in Ken Tyrrell’s Cooper. Tragically, Mayer suffered a fatal crash, in Australia during the Tasman Series, the next year in February 1964.

Bugatti brought two, new experimental Grand Prix cars, the Type 251, with transverse, straight-8 motors. Maurice Trintignant started the race in one, it lasted but 18 laps and was never seen again at a Grand Prix. Trintignant, in the ski hat with the pompom, sits behind his car on the pit counter.

Jim Hurtubise behind the wheel of his own front-engine Roadster with Offenhauser power. He was classified 14th after engine failure at the three-quarters distance. “Herk” as he was affectionately known, began his career in NASCAR on the old Daytona Beach course in 1955 and drove his last race, again with NASCAR, on the Daytona Tri-Oval in 1980.

Two N.A.R.T.-entered Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytonas surge along next to the Ligier-Maserati JS2 driven by Jean-Pierre Paoli and Alain Couderc. Daytona # 38 was driven by François Migault and Luigi Chinetti, Jr., while the #6 was driven by Milt Minter and Sam Posey. Only #38 made it tot he finish, in 13th position.

The grid is ready to go, in pit lane, for the rolling start. On pole is the Cobra Daytona Coupe driven by Bob Holbert and Dave McDonald, while next to it is another Shelby American entry, the Cobra driven by Tommy Hitchcock, Prince Zourab Tchkotoua and Jo Shlesser. The Daytona Coupe retired after a fire in the pits, while the Hitchcock Cobra would finish in 10th. Behind the Daytona Coupe is the eventual winner, a Ferrari 250GTO/64 driven by the somewhat unusual pairing of Pedro Rodriguez and Phil Hill.

Jochen Rindt drove a Brabham BT26-Repco, with the Repco 860 twin-cam heads, which proved to be an important power improvement, but not quite enough to top the Cosworth DFV. Rindt qualified 5th, but ultimately retired due to a fuel leak and resultant fire.

The great Jim Clark drifting the works Lotus 25 on this “miniature Nürburgring” circuit in central France. Clark dominated the race, breaking the lap record 15 times, while going on to an easy victory. He wore a bandana covering his face, but his expression can still be sensed underneath.
